Longevity: A Growth that Stagnates

The idea that most people born today will live to be 100 years or more seems to be under review. Recent studies indicate that increases in life expectancy, which were dramatic during the 19th and 20th centuries, have significantly slowed down.

In the world's longest-living populations, life expectancy at birth has only increased by 6.5 years since 1990, after nearly doubling during the last century thanks to advances in disease prevention.

A Biological Ceiling for Life Expectancy

The research led by S. Jay Olshansky from the University of Chicago's School of Public Health suggests that humans are reaching a biological limit on longevity.

“Medical band-aids are producing fewer years of life despite occurring at an accelerated pace,” Olshansky points out, implying that the period of significant increases in life expectancy has come to an end.

A child born in the United States today can expect to live up to 77.5 years, and while some individuals may reach 100, this will be the exception rather than the norm.

The Reality of Modern Longevity

The new study, published in the journal Nature Aging, demonstrates that projections of life beyond 100 years are, in many cases, illusory.

The analysis, which includes data from Hong Kong and other countries with high life expectancy, observes that in the United States, life expectancy has decreased. Olshansky warns that the assumptions of insurers and wealth management companies about extended life are “deeply flawed”.

Focus on Quality of Life

Despite the fact that science and medicine continue to advance, researchers suggest that it is wiser to invest in improving the quality of life rather than just extending it.

Gerontology, or the biology of aging, could be the key to a new wave of health and longevity. “We can break through the glass ceiling of health and longevity,” concludes Olshansky, emphasizing the importance of adopting healthier lifestyles and reducing risk factors to live not only longer but also healthier.

In summary, although medical advances have allowed many people to live longer, the reality is that life expectancy is reaching a limit that invites us to rethink our health and wellness strategies.
