Optimism is a quality that many people seek to develop.
Research has shown that the starting point for being optimistic can be partly inherited.
This was confirmed by Seligman et al. in a twin study, where it was found that identical twins were more likely to be both optimistic than twins.
In addition, research also shows that optimism is not dependent on race or gender; that is, people are equally likely to be optimistic regardless of their ethnicity or gender.
Therefore, we can confidently state that optimism is a relatively stable trait: those who are optimistic when they are young are likely to maintain this trait as they age.
Optimism can be improved through practices such as positive visualization and self-acceptance, as well as by practicing relaxing activities such as yoga and meditation.
