Who hasn't experienced that aromatic nightmare in an elevator or, worse yet, on an airplane? That moment when you wonder if some people's sense of smell has gone on vacation.
The trend of "scent to the max" is taking off, especially among teenagers (oh, youth!), in a fragrance market worth billions. So, how can you avoid being the next culprit of lotion overload?
Here are some foolproof tips for applying your favorite fragrance without suffocating your friends.
Less is more
This is the mantra of every fragrance lover. Start with a minimal amount of perfume or cologne. Don't give in to the temptation of spraying half a bottle! If applied correctly, one or two dabs on strategic points are enough.
Dr. Tran Locke reminds us that we all have different levels of sensitivity to scents. So, even if you don't smell it as strongly afterward, trust that it's still there. A fun fact: you may have become "nose blind," a phenomenon where the brain gets so used to the scent that it simply ignores it.
Hit the pulse points
Los pulse points are your allies: wrists, neck, behind the ears, and chest. These areas emit heat that helps diffuse the scent throughout the day.
Dr. Nick Rowan assures that this prolongs the duration of the perfume with less product. But be careful, dry skin is like the silent enemy of fragrance, so make sure to moisturize before applying it.
A curious fact: the famous perfumer Francis Kurkdjian advises using an unscented lotion or one that matches your fragrance to enhance its effect.
Leave your clothes alone!
Forget about spraying into the air and walking through the aroma. Besides wasting the perfume, you run the risk of staining your clothes and, worse yet, overwhelming the environment.
Dr. Zara Patel warns that while the scent may last longer on clothing, it can also be more overpowering. And if you overdo it, removing it will be a headache. One tip: if you exceed, it's easier to wash the fragrance off your skin than from fabric.
Did you know that water and soap are your best friends in these cases?
Test before you buy
It may seem obvious, but make sure the perfume actually smells good on you before bathing in it. A perfume changes depending on each person's body chemistry, creating a unique aroma.
This is part of the charm, but it can also result in an olfactory disaster if it doesn't mix well with you. So, always test it on your skin before wearing it in public.
Finally, resist the temptation to reapply. Even if you think the scent has faded, it’s probably still present and others can perceive it. Dr. Locke reminds us that olfactory adaptation is real, so it’s better to put the bottle away and carry on with your day!
And if you find yourself surrounded by someone else's cloud of perfume, remember that sometimes the best thing you can do is take a deep breath (if you can) and try to move gently. If it's someone close, a soft conversation could work wonders.
After all, a little kindness is always the best perfume.
