The former Prime Minister of Kazakhstan is accused of beating his wife to death.
Now, security footage from the restaurant where Kuandyk Bishimbayev beat his wife Saltanat Nukenov to death in November 2023 has been released.
The horrific attack lasted 8 hours, captured on the VIP area security cameras of the restaurant, sparking public outrage in Kazakhstan.
Kuandyk Bishimbayev is seen dragging his wife by the hair and punching and kicking her. The victim, Saltanat Nukenova, only 31 years old, died hours later from a traumatic brain injury.
During the trial, disturbing images of the assault have emerged. It is the first trial to be broadcast on the internet in Kazakhstan.
On April 11th, the Senate of that country approved the "Saltanat Law," in honor of the victim, which toughens penalties for domestic abuse. It was promptly signed into law by the current president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Kuandyk Bishimbayev had previously been sentenced and imprisoned for bribery in 2018, but was pardoned after serving two years of his 10-year sentence.
Bishimbayev claimed he was innocent, but admitted in court to hitting her and her death being unintentional.
Bishimbayev and Nukenova met in August 2022 and allegedly got married in December, although the marriage was not officially registered.
It was known that the relationship was troubled, with frequent fights and physical violence from Bishimbayev.
In November 2023, Bishimbayev was arrested for beating and strangling Nukenova during an argument. Despite attempts to conceal evidence, he now faces life imprisonment for his wife's murder.
Nukenova's cause of death was a brain injury, and it was revealed that Bishimbayev was obsessively jealous and controlling.
The trial has shocked Kazakhstan and exposed the shameful attitude of the political class towards gender-based violence.
