Ultra-processed? How many are too many?
The Western diet seems taken from an episode of “Fast and Furious”: we want everything instantly, without complications, and, if possible, with bright colors and eye-catching packaging. I confess, I also fell into the trap of practicality.
This study, which spanned nearly three decades and involved more than 42,000 health professionals, doesn't beat around the bush. It's not just a small group of health enthusiasts: it's serious science, backed by years of monitoring and tons of food surveys. Imagine, over 26 years watching how fast food can leave its mark on the brain.
Why do ultra-processed foods harm so much?
Here’s the crux of the matter: ultra-processed foods bring along a gang of invisible enemies. We’re talking about additives, preservatives, sugars, trans fats, and even colorants that, while making fries look irresistible, can wreak havoc on your body.
Have you noticed that every time you eat a lot of snacks you feel slower or less motivated? It’s not your imagination. Some of the early signs of Parkinson’s – such as apathy, constipation, sleep problems, or loss of smell – can appear years before tremors or slowed movements. So, what you put on your plate today could be deciding your vitality for tomorrow, no matter how dramatic that sounds.
Is there an escape?
No all is lost. Xiang Gao, the brain behind this mega-study, stated it plainly: choosing a more natural, less processed diet may be the best protector of your brain health. No magic formulas or restrictive diets. Just going back to basics: fruits, vegetables, legumes, fresh meats, and that bread that doesn’t look like a bathroom sponge.
Are you up for reviewing your weekly menu? How many ultra-processed foods do you consume a day? Do that little experiment. If your answer is close to 11, it might be time to make a change. I tried it and survived to tell the tale. I even discovered that broccoli isn’t so bad with a little creativity.
Extra fact to impress at the next meeting
Almost 10 million people live with Parkinson's in the world, and the number continues to grow. It's no small matter. To add to the concern, another study (American Journal of Preventive Medicine) revealed that for every 10% increase in the proportion of ultra-processed foods in your diet, your risk of dying increases by 3%. A small number, but when it comes to health, every point counts.
So the next time you walk down the snack and soda aisle, remember: every choice adds or subtracts. I'm not telling you to throw away everything delicious, but do think twice before celebrating your taste buds' birthday every day.
Ready for the challenge? I am. And if you have a healthy and tasty recipe, share it. Not everything has to be so serious, but it should be delicious and, above all, healthy.
