A recent study has revealed that individuals over 40 who maintain high levels of daily exercise enjoy better health and greater longevity compared to their less active peers.

According to this analysis, those who manage to place themselves in the top 25% of physical activity could add an average of five additional years to their lives.

Why is it so hard to recover after 40?


The surprising difference in life expectancy



The study, conducted by a team of Australian researchers led by Lennert Veerman, a public health professor, analyzed data from the United States obtained from activity trackers and public health records.

They found that even those who are at the lowest level of daily activity could see a significant increase in their life expectancy by increasing their physical activity.

Specifically, just moving to the top 25% in terms of activity could extend life by about 11 years.


The equivalence in physical activity



To reach these higher levels of activity, it was calculated that an average of 2 hours and 40 minutes of daily walking at a normal pace would be needed, which is equivalent to almost 5 km per hour.

For those who currently have a more sedentary lifestyle, this would involve adding approximately 111 minutes of daily walking.

Although this may seem like a challenge, the potential health and longevity benefits are considerable, with an extra hour of daily walking translating into six additional hours of expected life.

The authors of the study emphasize that, although the research shows a positive association between exercise and greater longevity, a direct causal relationship cannot be established.

However, they suggest that changes in urban planning and community policies could encourage an increase in physical activity.

Facilitating active transportation, creating more walkable neighborhoods, and expanding green spaces are some of the strategies that could promote a healthier lifestyle and increase life expectancy at the population level.

This study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, underscores the importance of staying active, especially after the age of 40, to improve both the quality and duration of life.
