In a world where hustle and obligations seem to dictate our steps, finding the path to a life lived with authentic freedom can feel like an endless quest.
However, at the heart of this journey lies the transformative possibility of embracing each moment with a lighter and more joyful perspective.
"Living with Freedom: The Art of Fully Enjoying Life" is an invitation to rediscover the magic of the everyday, through practices and reflections that guide us towards a more fulfilling and satisfying existence. As a psychologist, I have had the privilege of accompanying many individuals in their process of self-discovery and personal growth.
Take life with more happiness
"Do I plunge into the abyss or delight in a coffee?" Albert Camus wonders, bringing a smile to my face every morning as I savor my coffee. That phrase winks ironically at us about existence and the choice to embrace it wholeheartedly.
Caught up in everyday trivialities, we sometimes forget not to take life so seriously.
We get lost in the details, dreaming of greatness and recognition, without remembering that we are in the midst of a cosmic game.
Although there are moments when I take myself too seriously, I prefer to keep things light.
Taking things too seriously can trigger true torments. A spiral of crisis begins when we think we have not yet achieved our life goals.
The reticular activation system (RAS) highlights our flaws as if they were the only visible thing, leaving us feeling alone in the face of danger with no shelter in sight.
Our minds deceive us into believing that we will always be unsatisfied. Even under ideal circumstances, we feel the weight of the world upon us.
If you obsess over being perfect and everything seems to be going well, you end up being a prisoner of your own demands.
(You've set a trap for yourself!) It is necessary to constantly fuel your hungry ego by feeding it and protecting its fragile image from any threat.
What if you decide to let it all go and realize that this moment is all that matters? What if this is truly essential? Then you discover the humor of life.
Everything becomes lighter and more enjoyable like the foam of coffee during a casual encounter.
The simple experience of living should already fill us with wonder and joy.
You move forward just because; this attitude dispels your fears and insecurities along with false goals and empty ambitions, silencing that annoying ego forever.
And you know what? Lightening your perspective gives you the freedom to pursue what you truly desire. Because before we know it, we will all depart from this world.
So what's the point of living as if we were already at that point? Why settle for less when you could lead a full life? Perhaps finding a balance between reflecting on our distant future while enjoying the present is key to reminding ourselves of our fleeting existence traveling through this cosmos.
My experience as a psychologist
In my career as a psychologist, I have had the privilege of meeting people who have taught me as much as I hope I have taught them. One of these stories, which has stayed engraved in my memory, is that of Marta (a fictitious name to preserve her privacy), a patient who discovered the art of living lightly.
Marta came to my office overwhelmed by the weight of her responsibilities. Her life was full of "shoulds": she should work more hours, she should be a better mother, she should exercise more... The list was endless. During our sessions, Marta learned to question these "shoulds" and to redefine her priorities based on what truly made her happy.
One day, she shared with me a moment that changed her perspective. While running in the park trying to meet her daily exercise quota (another "should"), she abruptly stopped when she noticed how the sun rays filtered through the leaves of the trees.
At that moment, she decided to sit on the grass and simply enjoy the moment. She confessed to me that she couldn't remember the last time she had allowed herself to do something like that without feeling guilty for "wasting time."
This was a turning point for Marta. She began to make small changes in her life: dedicating time each day to do something she truly enjoyed, learning to say no without feeling bad about it, and above all, making room for those spontaneous moments of enjoyment and beauty.
Through Marta's case, I want to highlight the importance of living lightly. It is not necessary to carry all the external expectations and pressures; we can choose what to carry in our emotional backpack and what to leave behind. Living lightly does not mean being irresponsible or negligent with our obligations; it means giving space to joy and simple pleasures in our day-to-day lives.
Marta's transformation is a powerful testimony of the positive impact that simplifying our lives can have on our mental health. It reminds us that fully enjoying life is an art; one that we can all learn if we are willing to shed the unnecessary weight that prevents us from flying.
I invite all my readers to reflect on this: What are the "shoulds" weighing on you? How can you start living lighter and fuller today?
Let's always remember to seek those simple yet deeply meaningful moments; after all, they are the ones that truly color and flavor our existence.
